I am trying my luck breeding Westerns this year. I put the pair together but the male doesn't seem interested in breeding. My female is pulsating, lifting her tail, etc but the male won't lock up with her. He does follow her around for a while but no breeding. Anyone have any advice?
I suppose you dont look at your hogs 24/7, give them time. If the male follows the female - he is interested. And if the female does as you describe - she is extremely "turned on" :D.
You dont always catch them in the act. I have seen 4 locks this year, and they were locked for 45-60 minutes, and no more. So maybe you havent seen it. Last year i got 3 clutches, and i saw no locks on them.
Let the male go on a visit once a week, for 1-2 days.
Thanks, I've been keeping the female in with the male for 3-4 days and then I pull her out for a few days to feed. My male has gone off feed but the female is eating great. The female is an adult extreme red from from Justin Mitchams purple line. She's 350 grams. My male is 100 % het hypo and 60 grams. Hoping for some real nice reds this year.
It sounds great! Cant see anything that should stop you from achieving!
The males often stop eating, when they are focused on breeding :) Thats normal.
I caught them locked up this afternoon!
Congrats! Good luck!
Ok so here's an update... I've witnessed 3 lock ups as of today. My male started feeding again last week after his 1st shed and has taken two small hoppers so far. The female never did shed out, but I've heard that they don't always have an ovulation shed. Should I keep putting them together until he loses interest in her? He still follows her around the enclosure and I caught them locked up this morning. Just wondering how long I should keep putting them together.
